November 9 - Didn't See It Coming

Updated: Mar 6, 2023

Cried like a baby. Some were happy tears, Some were tears of suffering. All were necessary.

Fallon meets Ben, an aspiring novelist, the day before her scheduled cross-country move. Their untimely attraction leads them to spend Fallon's last day in LA together, and her eventful life becomes the creative inspiration Ben has always sought for his novel. Over time and amidst the various relationships and tribulations of their own separate lives, they continue to meet on the same date every year. Until one day Fallon becomes unsure if Ben has been telling her the truth or fabricating a perfect reality for the sake of the ultimate plot twist.

Can Ben's relationship with Fallon - and simultaneously his novel - be considered a love story if it ends in heartbreak?

Probably my favorite CoHo book, I have nothing but great things to say. While the book broke my heart in a million pieces, it was such a captivating story that I could'nt help but fall in love with their love. My favorite trope is the "meet once a year on this day" because it's a love that stands time and distance. I really connected with the characters and if there is one thing CoHo knows how to do with her characters it's put them in difficult situations where even the reader isn't sure what the next step would be or where to go from there. I didn't see the ending coming, and I'm usually really good at guessing where a story will go. All-in-all, a very welcome surprise. Might just be my favorite book of 2022.

A very easy 4.5
